Erbil, Kurdistan Region - Iraq

Erbil is, with a population of approximately 1.3 million, the fourth largest city in Iraq. Urban life at Erbil can be dated back to at least 6000 BC and it is one of the oldest continuosly inhabited cities in the world. At the heart of the city is the ancient Citadel of Arbil. The Hurrians were first to establish Urbilum and expand their rule to the rest of northern Mesopotamia. The city has since been under the rule of many tegional powers including the Assyrians, the Babylonians, Kurds, Persians, Greeks, Arabs, the Seljuk and Ottoman Turks. Erbil's archaelogical museum houses a large collection of pre-Islamic artifacts, and is a center for archaelogical projects in the area.
A very very BIG thanks for new place in my collection goes to my dear friend Oliver, who is at the moment teaching in Kurdistan. He always sends me great postcards from his trips (and new homes ;)). Thank you Oliver once again, I look forward to see you in the SE Europe soon. :)
