Mostar, Bosnia and Herzegovina

Mostar is a city and municipality in Bosnia and Herzegovina, the largest and one of the most important cities in the Herzegovina region. Mostar is situated on the Neretva river and is the fifth-largest city in the country. Mostar was named after the bridge keepers (natively: mostari) who in the medieval times guarded the Stari Most (Old Bridge) over Neretva river. The Old Bridge, built by the Ottomans in the 16th century, is one of the city's most recognizable landmarks. It's UNESCO World Heritage Site.

I've sent this postcard to myself when I went to Mostar for a trip with my friends. I had a really great time, Mostar is beautiful town with unique architecture, culture and people. I'll definitely return to Mostar soon. It was sad that I could send just a few cards from there (stamps were so hard-to-find!).

Bosnia-Herzegovina

My very dear postcrossing friend Jasmin from Bosnia and Herzegovina surprised me with this absolutely awesome postcard. It shows map of his country with stećci -monumental medieval tombstones that lie scattered across Bosnia, and the border parts of Croatia, Montenegro and Serbia. An estimated 60,000 are found within the borders of Bosnia and Herzegovina and the rest of 10,000 are found in Croatia, Serbia and Montenegro. Appearing in the 11th century, the stećci reached their peak in the late 14th to 15th centuries, before dying away during the Ottoman occupation. The Stećci have been nominated to the UNESCO World Heritage List as Joint Cultural Heritage by the four countries in 2009. There are quite a few these tombstones near my town (in its center too!). I have never seen postcards with them though.

Brčko, Bosnia-Herzegovina

Brčko district is one the most developed towns in Bosnia and Herzegovina. It is located in northern part of country. Beautiful EUROPA 2009 Astronomy stamp used, issued by Post of Republic Srpska.
